Cool On Every Surface

There's a lot to envy here isn't there. From the dark timbers to the monochromatic cool on every surface, there isn't a single thing in this home that I wouldn't happily tuck under my wing.

The best bits for me are the industrial light over the table, the awesome storage arrangement in the kitchen, the shade-less lamp in the dining area with the amber bulb {where oh where do you get those from??!!} and of course the fabulous long and narrow fauxdenza. Have been a long time fan of those, and yet too big a chicken shit to try one yet.

Cosseting Comfort

It's funny how you can have an opinion firmly set on something, and then all of a sudden one image can turn that opinion on its head.

I have to put my hand up and admit to not being a fan of the painted chevron floor craze, but this place is different. Somehow the industrial and vintage feel gives the treatment a bit more street cred, and it feels right.

Apart from that little burst of enlightenment, I'm loving the mix of timber and concrete, and the balance between industrial cool and cosseting comfort.

Explain This

Is there any need for me to explain this one? Probably not. The concrete, oh, the concrete. But oh, that leather Togo, the stone bath tub and mosaic tiles. Seriously good stuff here.

But I think my fave part is that steel kitchen island. Now that is something that I'd love to replicate. Industrial but dressed up with warm ceramics, timber and cane. Killer combo.

Put Together

I loved this gorgeous home when I popped over to The Selby for a catch up mission on the weekend. All that glorious timber, just spectacular. But I also really like the industrial edge that is shining through too.

A beautifully put together home all 'round.

Task

I must confess I have a nerdish admiration for task lighting. Man, even the term "task lighting" is stellar. It is, right? You feel it....don't you??!

OK, I may be out here on my own on this one, but I am totally won over whenever form = function, and task lighting just seems to be the nirvana of that state of being.

Case in point the lights in this kitchen. The task lights over the bench are aesthetically my favourite part of this home, but they're there to form a really usefull function. For me it's kind of bonus round points.

Beguilingly Simple

When I was talking about corten being one of my favourite building materials the other day, it reminded me of this stunning slice of Australian architecture that was featured on Australian Grand Designs, Callignee II. The manifestation of Chris Clarke's determination to never again experience the loss of his home to bushfire.

It is the reincarnation of Callignee I which was burnt to the ground only six days after it was completed, during the devastating Black Saturday bush fires that raged through Victoria in 2009. As a result of his loss, this home was built by Chris to be bullet (and fire) proof.

Apart from admiring his determination and amazing achievement, I particularly love the aesthetic of this country home, and of course, the material palette. Steel, concrete and recycled timbers. It seriously does not get much better.

One of my favourite details is that island bench. The bench is part of the remains from Callignee I. Built of mitred steel "I" beam and poured concrete, it is a beguilingly simple, but a stunning construction.
